We are very proud to have the most advanced technology available to you and your patients at Southern Pathology. We believe that our clients deserve the very best, therefore we invest our efforts and resources in technology and continuing education programs for our team.
Most of the agreements with our suppliers include a technology upgrade clause. This means that once that company produces a newer instrument we are ensured an upgrade. This is essential to our development and our commitment to bring you the most advanced technology available.
GROSSING AREA
Our state of the art grossing areas include digital recordings of our gross descriptions. The quality of this recording is essential as it minimizes misunderstandings during transcription.
The Shandon Pathcenter Enclosed Tissue Processor offers a unique circular shaped reaction chamber which promotes maximum fluid penetration through baskets and cassettes for the ultimate in processing quality and consistency. The practical design incorporates a 306-cassette-capacity basket plus the ability to add up to three extra processing modules for high-throughput laboratories. It allows user selectable heat, vacuum and pressure at every step which optimizes the efficiency of the processing routines you choose. The PTFE sealed reaction chamber lid is easily operated with one hand for loading and unloading of cassettes. 4 stainless steel 4.3 liter capacity wax baths are standard. The smooth contoured top surface prevents hidden build up of wax or reagents and is easy to keep clean. Rapid flush cycles minimize operational downtime, quickly cleaning the processor for the next batch of specimens. An optional extended flush cycle can be used when more thorough cleaning is required. Reagent bottles are designed to plug-in easily and positively with one hand, with connection directly to the processors reagent/air supply. Tissue baskets are specially designed for ease of loading allowing maximum reagent flow through and penetration around the cassettes for optimal processing efficiency. The easy-to-operate soft touch key pad control clearly identifies each function in international symbols.
The Tissue-Tek® Prisma®/Film® provides users with an easy-to-use platform that combines routine staining, special stain techniques, and coverslipping…all in one fully integrated system. The Tissue-Tek® Prisma® allows continuous loading of up to 60 slides at a time with a throughput of up to 500 slides per hour. It offers easy programming and instant visual tracking of staining runs with touch-sensitive color screens, and enables concurrent runs of routine H&E and special stains protocols. It works just as efficiently for cytology protocols. And streamlining your daily workflow has never been easier: with the expanded reservoir configuration, up to 51 stations can be utilized to run smaller sets of 20 slides at a time for the most even distribution of slides throughout the day, fitting workflow patterns for the most demanding labs. The Tissue-Tek® Film® uses a unique adhesive-backed polymer to protect the slides and provide long-term stability.
This unit consists of a slide processor, a computer system with Dako Link workflow compatibility and a printer. Artisan™ Link Special Staining System can be utilized to connect up to three instruments as a stand-alone system. It operates either in single or in a networked configuration system using a LAN system (Dako Link) or a Laboratory Information System (LIS); providing 24/7 access to stainer processing status. Artisan™ Link has new software with many new features in an improved graphical user interface.
It delivers excellent quality special stains using Artisan™ Reagents, which are packaged in a patented cartridge that provides precision dispensing of reagents for optimal staining quality.
Dako Autostainer Universal Staining System allows a multitude of staining procedures and processing of specimens to be performed automatically, rapidly and reproducibly. It is well-suited for immunostaining of tissue sections, cytospins and cell smears.
The system has three integrated elements:
Dako Autostainer Instrument
This unit consists of a slide processor, a desktop personal computer with software, and a printer
Reagents
Ready-to-use antibodies, negative controls, visualization kits, antigen detection kits and accessory reagents
Slide-Labeling System
Print customized labels directly from the Dako Autostainer software
The iScan 2.0 is a brightfield slide scanner with a 160-slide capacity, specifically designed for clinical laboratories with large volumes of slides. The iScan 2.0 also offers optical slide scanning on an easy-to-use platform at two magnifications: 20X and 40X. The iScan 2.0 is conveniently a compact system, thereby minimizing the requirement for lab space. The scanners’ large capacity has walk-away scanning capabilities, which allows users to click SCAN and walk-away. Once slides are loaded, the scanner will detect where and how many slides are present. Once the user selects the scan option, the scanner will automatically detect the area of tissue on the slide and scan the respective area. The user-friendly interface makes scanning intuitive and easy.
- Web based “thin-client” application, with “thick-client” option
- Seamlessly integrates with the Laboratory Information System (LIS)
- Intuitive user interface that mirrors pathology workflow, allowing pathologists to re-arrange the order by which they view cases, specimens, and images
- Quality control module allows images to be reviewed before being released to the pathologist for sign-ou
- Viewing experience simulates a microscope by allowing the users to pan and view the slide image at various magnifications
- Synchronized image viewing
- Provides access to several annotation tools, including drawing, textual, and measurement tools
- Reproducible image analysis that includes IHC protocols for assessing breast, prostate, hematology, brain and carcinoid cancers

The ThinPrep Pap Test is the most trusted, most widely used, most comprehensive pap test available. It is more accurate than a conventional “pap smear”.
Approved by the FDA in 1996, the ThinPrep Pap Test was the first liquid-based pap test — and today is the “gold standard” of pap tests. Since that time, cervical cancer cases have decreased by nearly 30%.
Originally known as the “pap smear”, the procedure involved collecting cells from the cervix and smearing them onto a glass slide.
With the ThinPrep Pap Test, the test sample is rinsed into a vial of liquid and is then sent to a laboratory. A representative sample is put on a slide, and the slide is stained with a special dye that makes the cells easier to see. Liquid-based pap tests are far more accurate than conventional pap smears, and are used in approximately 90% of pap tests given in the U.S. today.
The COBAS® AMPLICOR (CT/NG) Test is a qualitative in vitro test for the detection of C. trachomatis and/or N. gonorrhoeae DNA in urine from males and females, in endocervical swab specimens, and in male urethral swab specimens. The test utilizes the polymerase chain reaction (PCR) nucleic acid amplification technique and nucleic acid hybridization for the detection of Chlamydia trachomatis and/or Neisseria gonorrhoeae in urogenital specimens using automated COBAS® AMPLICOR analyzers.
The cobas TaqScreen MPX Test is a multiplex real-time PCR test that detects the presence of HIV-1, HIV-2, HCV and HBV in the sample. This test is used for screening whole blood donations.
Cervista HPV HR is the first FDA-approved high-risk HPV test designed to detect all 14 oncogenic strains of HPV and reduce false-positive results associated with low-risk cross reactivity. In addition, Cervista HPV HR contains a unique internal control to validate that sufficient DNA is present for testing. With Cervista HPV HR, you can be more confident in your HPV test results.
